Kazakhstan is preparing a new law aimed at reducing the influence of the Russian language on radio and television in the country, replacing it with a requirement to use the Kazakh language.

THE INFLUENCE OF THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE IN KAZAKHSTAN IS DECREASING

Speaking about the new law, which is expected to be approved by the Parliament of Kazakhstan, the Minister of Culture of Kazakhstan Aida Balayeva said: "The new media bill obliges to increase the use of the state language on television and radio from 50 to 70 percent."

KAZAKHSTAN IS TRYING TO DISTANCE ITSELF FROM RUSSIA!

Kazakhstan, where the Russian population is about 15 percent, has a long border with Russia. However, after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, the Kazakh administration is trying to move away from the Russian axis, developing closer relations with Western countries and China.

Earlier, Kazakhstan announced that it would abandon the Cyrillic alphabet of the Soviet era and switch to the Latin alphabet, making knowledge of the Kazakh language one of the mandatory conditions for obtaining Kazakh citizenship. A similar law on mass media submitted to the Parliament of Kazakhstan came into force in neighboring Kyrgyzstan last year. The law in Kyrgyzstan requires civil servants to be fluent in the Kyrgyz language, and stipulates that at least 60 percent of the content published by the media must be in the Kyrgyz language.
