Kremlin: Russia and the US are at the beginning of the path to improving and rebuilding relations

Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia and the United States are at the beginning of the path to improving and rebuilding relations, saying, “Our work is ongoing.”

Peskov answered journalists’ questions on current issues in the capital, Moscow.
Recalling that Russian President Vladimir Putin met with U.S. President Donald Trump’s Middle East Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in the city of St. Petersburg on April 12, Peskov emphasized that such meetings are useful and effective.

Peskov noted that during the meeting in question, the issue of a future meeting between Putin and Trump was not discussed in detail, adding, “The topics discussed in the contacts are heavy. Therefore, expecting immediate results from them would be wrong. Our work continues,” he said.

Commenting on Trump’s decision to extend the sanctions imposed by former U.S. President Joe Biden against Russia for another year, Peskov said, “We were not expecting a different decision. These are automatic procedures. We are at the beginning of the path to improving and rebuilding bilateral relations. Therefore, we do not have high expectations in this regard.”

Regarding Europe’s approach to the Ukraine crisis, Spokesperson Peskov said, “It is not in the mindset of finding peaceful negotiation paths regarding the Ukraine crisis; rather, it is displaying an approach aimed at further fueling the war.”

Evaluating the possibility of reestablishing diplomatic relations between Russia and Georgia, Peskov stated that they are ready to take steps in this direction.
Peskov also addressed the claims in some media outlets that Russia would participate in a meeting to be held in Turkey on April 15–16 concerning the security of the Black Sea within the context of a possible Russia-Ukraine ceasefire, saying, “I cannot comment on this. I cannot confirm it.”
