President Aliyev Commemorates Azerbaijanis Who Lost Their Lives in World War II
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev commemorated the Azerbaijanis who lost their lives during World War II on the 80th anniversary of the Soviet army’s victory over Nazi Germany.
President Aliyev, together with his wife Mehriban Aliyeva, visited the grave of Azerbaijani General Hazi Aslanov — who was awarded the title “Hero of the Soviet Union” — in Baku.
The President and the First Lady laid flowers at the grave and observed a moment of silence to honor the Azerbaijani citizens who died in the war.
May 9, which marks the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany, is celebrated as Victory Day in former Soviet countries.
More than 640,000 Azerbaijanis fought in the ranks of the Soviet army during World War II, and over 300,000 of them lost their lives. In addition, 130 Azerbaijanis were awarded the title “Hero of the Soviet Union” during the war.
Azerbaijan made a significant contribution to the victory by supplying 80% of the Soviet army’s fuel needs and 90% of its motor oil.
