TRNC President Tatar Meets Greek Cypriot Leader Christodoulides in the Buffer Zone
President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot Administration (GCA) Leader Nikos Christodoulides met in the United Nations (UN)-controlled buffer zone in Cyprus.
During the meeting, hosted by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Colin Stewart, the planned opening of new border crossings between the two sides, the restoration of cemeteries on both sides, new steps to be taken regarding the environment and climate change, and the arrest policies implemented by the Greek Cypriots against foreigners who purchase property in the TRNC were discussed.
Following the meeting, TRNC President Tatar stated to journalists that he conveyed the issues related to the GCA’s arrest policy against those who purchase property in the north and expressed his satisfaction with the reappointment of Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar as the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus.
Tatar emphasized that his stance on the border crossing points between the two sides remains unchanged, noting that he once again brought up the Haspolat and Akıncılar crossing points during the meeting. He added that the other side continues to insist on the corridor issue.
GCA Leader Christodoulides argued that the slow progress in the Cyprus issue is not productive.
Christodoulides stated that the outcomes he expected from the meeting were achieved and added that TRNC President Tatar's requests to lift the sanctions and arrest policy applied by the GCA against foreigners who purchase property in the TRNC were unacceptable.
